the day we went to jungfraujoch
Jungfraujoch has eluded us once again but we did get one step closer this time!! Maybe next time – we will actually see a view.
Back in 2006, our day excursion to Jungfraujoch was cancelled so we never even got to go up to the top of Europe. At least this time round, we did!
It was three trains up: (1) Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen (2) Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Schneidigg (3) Kleine Schneidigg to Jungfraujoch
We made it up there but what did we see?? Nothing when we got to the top, except snow and white clouds. Well, actually we lie a little… It was blowing a “blizzard” (at least that is what it felt) when David ducked outside to take this photo!
Up to 3454 metres (11 333 feet) where the air was thin, Le was feeling a little woozy from the high altitude so maybe it was a good thing we didn’t see much! So we took this photo of what could’ve been:
Then it was time to come down…. three more trains down the other side of the mountain (1) Jungfraujoch to Kleine Schneidigg (2) Kleine Schneidigg to Grindelwald (3) Grindewald to Interlaken Ost.
It couldn’t have been a foggier day to be up there. It was raining and the train trip up and down was somewhat scenic at least. Especially on the way down when we got glimpses of blue sky and this adorable mother & baby pair 🙂
Although the weather wasn’t ideal, we still enjoyed ourselves thoroughly! Last time it was in November, this time in August… think we will aim for June for next time – as the saying goes, “Third time lucky.” Fingers crossed!
Has there been a travel experience that seems to keep eluding you?

[…] on the flip side, our biggest disappointment was without a doubt, another unsuccessful trip to Jungfraujoch – at least we got onto the train this time […]

Gorgeous mountains. What a shame that the sky wasn’t as clear as you would have wanted, but still. What a view!

Switzerland is just breath-taking! We could NOT get bored of it. It was a shame about the weather but it seems like we are getting closer to getting the view we are imagining. Hopefully one day when we get it, it won’t be anti-climatic LOL!

We drove through the Alps recently and our satnav messed with us and got us lost and stressed so we didn’t appreciate the scenery. We drove back through heavy rain and low cloud . . . So no view. Third time lucky for us? Don’t know when that will be. 😦

Oooh no!! That’s a nuisance. But it seems like Switzerland has had a shocking summer. We heard it rained 40 out of the first 60 days of the summer so we were very lucky to have gotten only a few days of drizzle and one day of really bad weather – we really can’t complain 🙂

I wonder what the percentage is for a clear day at Jungfrau 🙂

Apparently it does happen – on the odd occasion, maybe 😉

Reblogged this on "Sees" the Day and commented:
This post is from our travel blog – here is how we had to see the bad weather at Jungfraujoch from a brighter perspective 🙂

Ohh guys…. the second time was already better!! Im sorry about that…one more reason for you to come back to Europe a third time 😀

Very true 🙂 We are sure to be back! Love it so much here – think we should spend six months here and six months in Australia for summer all year round 😉

All in all, you still got some beautiful photos! We plan to be in Interlaken this Spring, so I hope we get good weather 🙂

Thanks Greg for your comment 🙂 appreciate the compliment! Interlaken wasn’t snowing but it was wet! We hope you have great weather and a wonderful time 🙂

Oh, and we were there in June!
August 28, 2014 at 6:15 pm
Okay – so it is luck of the draw and not necessarily time of the year but in the summer months, we would have better luck 🙂

The mountain was covered in snow and there were icicles hanging off the eaves. It was fantastic for us. I suspect there might always be some snow at that altitude.

We had a similar experience on Zugspitze in Germany, except that we were very lucky because for about half an hour in the afternoon the cloud cleared and we saw the most marvellous view. Anyway we just enjoyed playing in the snow…we don’t have that here. But the day we went to the Eagle’s Nest at Berchtesgarten it was all clouded over.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us! Guess we can’t always be fortunate with every experience, right? This entire trip, we feel like we have been very spoilt weather-wise every day. So really, one cloudy day up to Jungfrau is not a big deal!

I would also like to go there one day. And to Grindelwald itself. Have you written a post about Grindelwald? I have been interested in visiting Grindelwald since staying at the Launceston resort that bears the same name. So sorry that your day was foggy, but it was an experience nonetheless and next time maybe the weather will be better.

Thanks for your comment! 2 from 2 of bad weather is pretty rough, huh? We actually didn’t see anything of Grindelwald except the train station (so no post about it) but we think that photo we took on the way down, looking down on a village, it was possibly Grindewald! 🙂

another town for the wishlist then… 🙂
